Under general supervision, an employee in this class performs work in accordance with professional practices, special orders from doctors and established rules and regulations. General assignments are usually received from a professional supervisor responsible for assigning and supervising the work of the professional nursing staff. The incumbent is expected to perform these duties without detailed instructions. Supervision may be exercised over Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel. Does related work as required. NOTE SHIFT AVAILABLE FOR YAPHANK : Yaphank Overnight (11 PM - 7 AM) is Tuesday - Saturday KEY RESPONSIBILITIES : · Provides nursing care to patients in the Jails, including responding to emergencies, first aid, and CPR during emergency response; · Assists providers with examinations, special procedures and/or specialized therapeutic treatments; · Accepts orders from practitioners, including called in orders; Gives medication, immunizations and nursing treatment as prescribed by a physician, and notes reactions of patients to medications and treatments; · Supervises the work of Licensed Practical Nurses, Medical Assistants, and other medical personnel; · Makes rounds of housing areas, checks patients, nursing stations and supplies; · Obtains medical history of patients and screens for numerous biopsychosocial needs and/or problems, such as substance abuse, tuberculosis and infectious diseases; · Performs care for wounds, administers medications, gives injections and assesses patients; · Counsels and educates patients regarding their health and provider’s orders and the need for further diagnostic tests, and completes referrals to specialists and/or ancillary support services; · May serve as a member of various health center committees, such as quality assurance and infection control; · Writes reports, keeps statistics, and maintains charts and spreadsheets on the condition and progress of patients; · Tracks patients with specific conditions or treatments, such as MAT, diabetes, HIV, etc. Benefits For You Now And Your Future Health Insurance: Suffolk offers a comprehensive health insurance plan, including medical, dental, and vision coverage Pension Paid Time Off: Vacation (2 weeks to start) is accrued based on length of service; sick leave allows employees to take time off for illness without sacrificing pay; personal days can be used for a variety of reasons; and thirteen (13) paid holidays. NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS · Candidates must possess, or, for those with limited permits, obtain within one year, a current registration to practice as a Registered Nurse issued by the State of New York, and must maintain a valid registration throughout employment in this title. · Depending upon assignment, candidates may be required at the time of appointment and during employment in this title, to possess a valid license to operate a motor vehicle in New York State. ADDITIONAL POSITION DETAILS: · Good knowledge of nursing principles and techniques and their relation to medical practice · Good knowledge of medical procedures, sanitation, personal hygiene and dietetics · Skill in the application of professional nursing techniques and practices · Ability to plan, assign and supervise the work of support staff in a manner conducive to full performance and high morale · Ability to follow oral and written instructions of a technical and professional nature in exact detail and to administer therapeutic treatments prescribed by a physician · Ability to recognize and interpret symptoms and make assessments · Ability to instruct subordinates and other people in basic nursing care · Ability to deal with each patient sympathetically and tactfully, while at the same time carry out the treatment prescribed for them · Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position · Must be punctual, professional, and dress appropriately.
